Stephen H. Conwill
Steve Conwill leads Milliman's Tokyo office as a principal and Japan Representative.
In 2021, Steve was elected to Milliman’s Board of Directors and was named Global Practice Director for Life and Financial Services.
Experience
For more than 20 years, Steve has consulted to Japanese life insurance companies on financial and strategic management issues, M&A, corporate restructuring, and demutualization.
He joined Milliman in 1988, and moved to Japan in 1992, to help establish the Tokyo office. He served as Managing Director in Japan between July 1996 and December 2004.
After returning to the US, Steve assumed the position of Life Research Director. In this position, he managed worldwide research efforts for Milliman’s Life and Financial Services Practice.
Steve returned to Japan in 2012 to lead Milliman’s Japan operations, and was elected to Milliman’s Board of Directors in 2021.
Steve’s personal research interests include enterprise risk management, with a focus on organization risk, internal communications, and the sharing of knowledge within an organization. In addition, he has developed innovative approaches to the modeling of macroeconomic and geo-political risks.
Drawing on these research interests, Steve works closely with Milliman’s Life Technology Solutions team to support the design and implementation of financial forecasting systems.
A frequent speaker at insurance forums, Steve has made presentations to the Society of Actuaries, the Institute of Actuaries of Japan, the American Council of Life Insurance, and other groups. He has published analyses in the Asian Wall Street Journal, Asia Insurance Review, Japan Insurance Magazine, and Contingencies.
