Community Mitigation and Modeling commissioned by Rancho Mission Viejo
A series of wildfire events occurring in California since 2017 has resulted in insurers increasing rates and decreasing capacity in high-risk areas. Rancho Mission Viejo recently commissioned Milliman and other organizations to more accurately account for the risk reduction efforts made when determining eligibility and pricing of insurance. This group of collaborators has developed a framework for community mitigation and modeling. Our report discusses elements of the framework as follows:
- Fire path modeling
- Parcel level inspections
- Vegetation treatment and dynamic community wildfire protection plan
- Structure-to-structure modeling
- Wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire protection score
- Adjacent study: the WUI data commons
